Thomas Jira wurde 1951 in Glauchau/Sachsen geboren. Nach dem Studium der Pharmazie an der Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald (Diplom-Pharmazeut 1973) promovierte er 1980 bei Roland Pohloudek-Fabini über ein analytisches Thema (Tropanalkaloide, quartäre Ammoniumverbindungen).

1975 erhielt er die Approbation als Apotheker. Die Habilitation erfolgte 1989 über HPLC-Untersuchungen zur Trennung saurer, basischer und neutraler Analyten an Umkehrphasen unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Ionenpaar-Chromatographie. Seit 1990 ist er Privat-Dozent (Lehrbefugnis für Pharmazeutische Chemie) und derzeit als Akademischer Direktor am Institut für Pharmazie, Lehrstuhl für Pharmazeutische/Medizinische Chemie tätig. Seit 1987 ist er Vorstandsmitglied und seit 1992 Vorsitzender der Scheele Gesellschaft e. V. (Landesgruppe Mecklenburg-Vorpommern der Deutschen Pharmazeutischen Gesellschaft). Die Erteilung der Approbation als Apotheker erfolgte 1975. Er ist Fachapotheker für Offizin-Pharmazie (1983) und Fachapotheker für Pharmazeutische Analytik (1993).

Im Rahmen der Fachapothekerausbildung ist er als Weiterbildungsleiter für Pharmazeutische Analytik ermächtigt.  Studienaufenthalte absolvierte er an der Karls-Universität Prag/Hradec Kralove (1986) und an der Medizinischen Universität Szeged/Ungarn. Wissenschaftliche Kooperationen bestehen seit 1994 mit Partnern in den Instituten für Pharmazeutische Chemie der Karls-Universität in Prag/Hradec Kralove (Tschechische Republik) und der Karl-Franzens-Universität in Graz (Österreich).

Gegenwärtige Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Untersuchungen zur Analytik und Reaktivität achiraler und chiraler Verbindungen mittels HPLC und Kapillar-elektrophorese sowie Untersuchungen chiroptischer Eigenschaften von Verbindungen (Circulardichroismus (CD) und optische Rotationsdispersion (ORD) on-line mit HPLC).

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Fa. Syntrex GbR, Greifswald, erfolgen Untersuchungen an neuartigen Calixaren-HPLC-Säulen (u.a. Einsatz multidimensionaler Verfahren zur Optimierung komplexer Trennprobleme) sowie an der Entwicklung chiraler Calixarene.
